History

19th May , 1901 saw the fulfillment of the desire of the members of bar at Lucknow in particular and Oudh in general when the Oudh Bar Association of Lucknow was formed. These hundred years have changes the face of the world, but legal profession by and large has retained its character. Before 1926 there were three categories of lawyers , Advocates, Vakils , Pleaders . Barristers were enrolled as advocates by the Court in organisation by merit. However the Bar did not have any organized place until the turn of the century after the construction of the new Court building Oudh Bar Association was allotted two rooms for its library and use by lawyers practicing in the Court of Judicial Commissioner. About the same time the Bar Association was organized without any distinction of race or category of lawyers.

The founding of the Oudh Bar Association with the object of serving the legal profession and rendering public service was the ultimate aim.

Looking back over a span of one hundred years and considering the achievements and failures the overall picture that emerges is happy. Making a modest beginning the Oudh Bar Association has grown into an institution which has been rendering useful service to the society.

Lawyers at Lucknow made their appearance in 1856 when the Judicial Commissioner’s Court at Lucknow was established upon the Annexation of Oudh by the English rulers. Barristers from England started legal practice as they came to earn fortune from the Taluqdari cases. These were in course of time joined by their Indian counterparts and a combined bar of Indian and Englishmen flourished at Lucknow. This is evident from the fact that both Indian and English lawyers joined in the founding of the Oudh Bar Association and getting it registered under the Society Registration Act . English lawyers like St. George Jackson and his brother John Jackson have been the prominent office bearers of the Oudh Bar Association . Similarly A.P.Sen, R.F.Bahadurji, Choudhry Niamat-ullah have adorned the office of President of the Oudh Bar Association.

The Oudh Bar Association has had eminent leaders and public men. Bishan Narain Dar became a Bar – at- law, but was expelled from the Biradari for having crossed the seas. He presided at the session of the Indian National Congress in the year 1911 at Calcutta . It was in the year 1911 that the partition of Bengal made by Lord Curzon in 1905 and which had stirred the entire country , was annulled . Members of the Bar at Lucknow , as elsewhere were also leaders of public opinion and actively participated in the freedom struggle . participated in the freedom struggle.

Lawyers may come and go but the Oudh Bar Association has had a unique record in as much as some leaders of the bar shall always be remembered by the posterity for their contribution to literature . Bishan Narain Dar, Brij Narain Chakbast, Atul Prasad Sen and Anand Narain were poets of eminence .Poems of these members of the bar are a source of inspiration for all times to come.
